Universal Design

Universal Design (U.D.) is a concept of design that buildings and products should be usable and effective for everyone regardless of age or ability. Universal Design in not the same as accessibility standards which is code requirement for public buildings and multifamily housing. Universal Design is optional and can be incorporated into a home a little bit or throughout. Universal Design in a residence would allow you to make your residence your Forever Home without having to make major modifications to your house in the future.  In most cases you don’t even notice Universal Design like wider hallways, stepless entries, lever handles and 36” wide doors, but these features benefit everyone, not just those with disabilities. Curtiss W. Byrne Architect was the architect for the Universal Design prototype house in Pagedale, Missouri and has incorporated U.D. in many large and small projects. Curtiss has also been a presenter at two Universal Design conferences in St. Louis, MO.
